The courses are suitable for people with varying carving skills - from the complete beginner to the more experienced stone carver. You will be taught good working practice, tool handling and the basic stone carving techniques.
Students can work on their own designs or the tutor can suggest a start point, creating your own unique piece of work to take home at the end of the course.

Monday morning or evening classes that run for seven consecutive weeks. Students can work on their own designs or be directed to a starting point for a variety of projects ranging from sculpture in the round, relief carving or architectural carving, creating their unique carving and taking it home with them at the end of the course. Tool skills and techniques are taught at all levels.
Complete beginners will be guided through the whole process, taught good working practice, tool handling and the basic stone carving techniques. The emphasis for those with some experience will be on improving their technique.
An environment in which skills and ideas are exchanged freely is strongly encouraged. Gray’s Carving Studio promotes a collegiate environment, with a particular emphasis on learning the craft (tool-skills and good working practice, out of which the creative process can arise). Mindfulness practice is recognised as being therapeutic and helpful for wellbeing. Craft is an embodied activity at its best, using our bodies, minds and aesthetic sense. Combining both craft and mindfulness practice and using mindfulness as a lense to make things out of stone as an anchor and vehicle for mindfulness.
