An introduction to Gray’s Stone Carving Studio

24th January 2024

Hello, from Gray’s Stone Carving Studio. I’m Henry, and this is a brief introduction to our recently launched blog.

For over a decade Gray’s Stone Studio has been based in the picturesque Chalke Valley on Knowle Farm, Bowerchalke. The farm, overseen by Angus and Janie Mann and their boys, Timmy and Hugo, also includes a lovely venue known as Bowerchalke Barn, ideal for all celebrations. We feel really lucky to have this workshop space here, where we get to create things in stone.

Gray’s Stone Carving Studio employs Tamsin and myself, Henry Gray. We are the designers, carvers, letter cutters, masons, administrators and tea makers.

Our focus primarily revolves around crafting bespoke memorials of celebration and commemoration, made in collaboration with the client. Additionally, we extend our expertise to teaching stone carving to individuals of all skill levels. People come to our classes not only to learn tool skills, to refine and develop their abilities, and also for the tea and chat. We’ve developed a really lovely carving community.

I haven’t always been a stonemason. I’ve only been working as a stonemason, carver and letter cutter for about 28 years, so relatively new to the trade and am continuously learning. But I do have plenty enough experience to share some here on the blog.

Well, that’s enough for now, but do come back and check out our stories, experiences, tips and tricks from the workshop.
