All about our Stone Carving Courses

What will you do in the class and how to book on!

Hi everybody.

Our courses are suitable for people with varying skills – from the complete beginner to experienced stone carvers. We will work with you to develop good working practice, tool handling and stone carving techniques. Our experience is that out of the craft the creative process can arise. The emphasis for those with some experience will be on improving their techniques.

The classes are kept to a maximum of 8 people to allow individual tuition and support.
We like to encourage you to bring along your own ideas but can make suggestions for something to carve, creating a unique piece to take home at the end of the course. The primary purpose is to have fun!

On the day

On the day we will meet, have a cuppa and a quick tour of the studio/workshop and given a Health and Safety talk. Then we will set you up with a banker/bench and talk about the projects you’ll be working on.
Henry will introduce you to the stone and its suitability for carving, the different types commonly available, and their qualities.

You will be guided through the various tools to be used on your project. Careful focus will be given on developing good tool skills, the correct way to hold and handle them and selecting the right tool for the right job.

For most projects you will be given a block of Limestone with which to work, easily carved by beginners yet still a material of choice for many professional carvers, which is yours to take home at the end of the course.
All materials, tools, safety glasses, and dust masks will be provided. Health and safety are of paramount importance, students are strongly advised to wear steel toe-cap safety boots (or stout footwear) and old clothes.

Coffee, tea and biscuits are provided on a morning course. A light lunch, usually homemade soup and bread with cake are included on a day course.
